Mini-Grant Recipient Success Stories: School District of Palm Beach County

In 2016-2017 The School District of Palm Beach County’s Nutrition Services and School Based Wellness team received a Healthier Jupiter Mini-Grant for a Nutrition Education project and Field Trip for Jupiter Middle School Students.

In an effort to infuse nutrition education and to promote healthy eating practices the Nutrition Services and School Based Wellness teams took 48 students and teachers from Jupiter Middle to Kai Kai Farm in Indiantown. In addition to the tour of the farm, students listened to a twenty minute lecture about vest growing practices in Florida as they enjoyed a healthy snack. (broccoli, cherry tomatoes, and green beans). Check out photos from the field trip below.

To reinforce the importance of growing food and to inspire students to grow their own, as part of the Healthier Jupiter Grant, Jupiter Middle School received $1,000 to refurbish their existing school garden. The project wrapped up in February with a Harvest Day Celebration for all Jupiter Middle School students hosted by the school and the Jupiter Middle School Culinary Program.

The School District of Palm Beach County’s Nutrition Education and Field Trip project met Healthier Jupiter’s focus to increase availability and affordability of fresh, healthy foods.

About Healthier Jupiter’s 2019-2020 Mini-Grant Program

Healthier Jupiter, a community initiative founded to address health and quality of life issues, for the fourth year in a row, Healthier Jupiter will offer Mini Grants to impact the health of our community.   1. Increase the availability and affordability of fresh, healthy foods;

  2. Help individuals become more physically active on a regular basis;

  3. Encourage people to engage mentally and physically to practice healthy behaviors; and/or

  4. Support changes in the built environment and community policies that promote equitable opportunities for healthy living.
