Why Does a Healthy Lifestyle Matter?
A healthy lifestyle is one way that you may be able to prevent or delay the onset of chronic diseases with which many Americans are diagnosed each year, such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, and lung disease. You have a lifelong relationship with your health and well-being! It is best to pay attention to your health needs and address them as soon as possible. Just by reading this guide, you are already moving in the right direction!

Start with a Health Assessment
Know your numbers to assess your own health risks – your blood pressure, your blood sugar, your heart rate, complete blood count (CBC), your weight and Body Mass Index (BMI). Meet with your doctor(s) to learn more about your risks and create your personal health goals. Whether you have a primary care physician, health insurance, or neither, this SMART Guide can assist you in locating medical care and services.

Make Healthier Food Choices
It is always smart to incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet and to reduce processed foods and sugars. The number of calories or amount from each food group you should eat is based on your age, gender, and level of physical activity. Keeping track of what you eat can have a positive impact on your health.

Add Realistic Goals
Making any lifestyle change, such as losing weight or quitting smoking, can be challenging. Having a realistic goal in mind will give you something to work toward, motivate you to stay on track and provide a measure of how well you are doing. Remember to start with small consistent changes and celebrate your success.

Take Time for Physical Activity
The recommended amount of physical activity is 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of heart-pumping activity per week. If you are inactive, start exercising 5 to 10 minutes a day and increase gradually over time. Find activities that you love to do, maybe with a partner, and try moving your body every day. Every little bit helps! You’ll see your ability and energy improve over time.
