Couch to 5K Training Program
Healthier Jupiter, in partnership with the Town of Jupiter’s Recreation Department, and Jupiter Medical Center’s Cary Grossman Health & Wellness Center, offered our 5th annual FREE 9-week Couch to 5K Training Program to help individuals gradually increase their physical activity levels enough to walk or run a 5K (3.1 miles). Participants received encouragement and training guidance from Jupiter Medical Center Wellness Center trainers and be supported by other participants along the way. This program is a great way to ease your way into a healthier lifestyle and get ready for that 5K you have always wanted to run! And it is designed to start (or re-start) whenever! We were fortunate in 2022 to also partner with Live Like Jake and Els for Autism Foundation.
Who:
The Couch to 5K Training Program is open to all physical activity levels, abilities and ages. Families are encouraged to participate together. All are welcome!
When:
The official meet ups were held from February to April every Saturday for 9 weeks. Our group trained for 3 races:
Roots & Ruts Off-Road 5K on April 30th at Els Center for Excellence
Town of Jupiter Turtle Trot on May 7th at Ocean Cay Park
Live Like Jake 5K on May 14th at Riverbend Park
Where:
Training was held at Town of Jupiter Riverwalk, specifically the Plaza Down Under the River Walk (25 S Coastal Highway, Jupiter, Florida, 33477). Spot #6 on the map.

The Let’s Move: Commit to Change Physical Activity Challenge invites Palm Beach County residents to form teams and get moving together – let’s make this fun! Commit to exercising at least 30 minutes a day, log your minutes, and let’s see if we can get Town of Jupiter and the Healthier Jupiter Team to #1!
The Couch to 5K Training Program helps individuals gradually increase their physical activity levels enough to walk or run a 5K (3.1 miles) in 9 weeks. In addition to the encouragement and training guidance from Jupiter Medical Center Wellness Centers, we want to provide participants with resources to be active in the community. One resource is helpful technology or phone apps.
It is too expensive to work out. I don’t have the right equipment to strength train. Have you ever had these thoughts? Well, I am here to let you know Jupiter has some great areas where you can walk, run, bike and strength train for free!

Nutrition and healthy foods are an important part of your Couch to 5K Training. It is very important to make sure that your body has enough energy to fuel your walk or runs and recover. Chelsea Carr (pictured left) from Jupiter Medical Center’s Dietetic team created material for our Couch to 5K walkers and runners to fuel up during training and race day. And don’t forget to hydrate!
We know that for some of our Couch to 5K participants once they do one 5K they are hooked! We don't blame you - it is awesome being around other like minded individuals and striving to get better every time. Swag bags are cool too! The Couch to 5K Training Guide has strength training exercises (without equipment - yay!), which helps with endurance, flexibility, and prevents cramping. Check out the Strength Training How to Videos from our very own Lilly and Taylor from Jupiter Medical Center’s Cary Grossman Health and Wellness Center. They share proper techniques and modifications.
One of the benefits is assistance from the Jupiter Medical Center trainers when participants have aches and pains. As some participants start to walk or run more, they have raised concerns about lower back pain. Try out these stretches to help.

Spring is a time for new beginnings. That’s why I decided to sign up for Healthier Jupiter’s Couch to 5K training program with my mom and sister. To be honest I had never done anything like that before, but I was excited to try it out.
