Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's CF CLIMB FLORIDA

What is Virtual CF Climb Florida?

Take the Challenge. Between now and October 3rd, challenge yourself to climb 65 flights or climb any surface for 65 minutes. Why 65? We are celebrating Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s 65th Anniversary and our #65RosesChallenge. Climb flights of stairs, summit your favorite bridge, walk bleachers, run on an incline or take on the stair stepper machine! Click here to watch a sample of Bethany and Andrew’s virtual climb in Gainesville, Florida!

Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. Whether you split up your virtual climb between days or knock it out at once, everyone can be all in and support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s mission to cure CF!

What are the Health Benefits of Climbing the Stairs?

*Note: The following tips are presented for informational purposes only. Participants should consult with their physicians before undertaking any exercise or training program.

Climbing stairs is an example of a practical, everyday physical activity that provides health benefits. It can also burn off calories — about 65 calories in 15 minutes. Going at a faster pace or carrying heavier items can burn even more calories. Climbing stairs can be an effective exercise for strengthening muscles, improving your balance and boosting your cardiovascular health.

Beginners can get a good workout by walking up stairs one at a time while the more advanced will enjoy the challenge of running up the stairs taking two or even three steps at a time.

Stair climbing is free – all you need is access to a set of stairs in the public arena. Public stairs, apartment blocks, malls, bleachers and office blocks are all viable stair climbing venues and no special equipment is required – just some basic sneakers and comfortable clothes.

With good movement mechanics and proper shoe wear, stair climbing will not cause excessive wear on your bones and joints. Proper stair climbing posture means:

  • Neck and shoulders should be relaxed.

  • Look forward but periodically look down to check for the stairs.

  • Avoid bending the neck to look down for extended periods of time.

  • The entire foot should be placed on the step.

  • Do not allow the heels to hang off the edge of the step.

  • Keep your trunk upright and avoid excessively bending forward.

  • Avoid locking (over straightening) your knees while climbing up.

These recommendations are provided by SkyRise Chicago, U.S. News and Health and Style.
