El Sol believes that food and cooking can nourish us both on a physical and an emotional level and it’s also an easy way for us to connect with others on a human level. Through the support of the 2016-2017 Healthier Jupiter Mini-Grant, El Sol created a healthy cookbook named “The Flavors of the Sun” with recipes from 40 community members. Our goal in 2017 was to create the cookbook to promote healthy eating and to give our clients the resources and knowledge needed to prepare nutritious meals while maintaining the flavor. We sold over 100 cookbooks. El Sol would like to continue to bridge and reach across the table to welcome our friends, families, and neighbors by inviting them into our home (El Sol) for a series of six healthy cooking classes with recipes from The Flavors of the Sun Community Cookbook.

How will this project create lasting and transformative change in the health, wellness and success of the greater Jupiter community…

The 2017 Healthier Jupiter Community Survey showed that 68% of Hispanic/Latinos do not eat fruits/vegetables every day. 96% of El Sol clients are Hispanic/Latino and utilizing a healthy cookbook that contains traditional Hispanic/Latino recipes will be a benefit for our clients. The Flavors of the Sun Cooking Series will provide the knowledge needed to practice healthy behaviors. Cooking a healthy meal should become one of our daily habits, like how many hours we sleep, or how much activity we get, and carving out time for emotional nourishment. The benefits of cooking together include bonding, communication, bridging cultural differences, and more.

El Sol’s mission is to improve the quality of life for the residents of Jupiter and surrounding communities by providing services primarily to day laborers, their children and families. El Sol envisions a harmonious integrated community in which all people can reach their highest potential. We seek for Jupiter to be a model for other communities serving day laborers and their families. Learn more at www.friendsofelsol.org.
