Healthier Jupiter and Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Partner Together for Walking + Biking Safety

In 2020 and 2021, Healthier Jupiter has been fortunate to work with The Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida on several projects: Be Kind to Your Mind, the Mz Biz Competition and the Thin Mint Sprint 5K. With this partnership, we were able to design a custom patch program! Healthier Jupiter decided on Walking and Biking Safety, specifically safety tips and walk audits.

Walk Audit is one of the best tools we have as community members! A Walk Audit is a way to document how walkers, bikers and drivers use a street. They go through a checklist to see if streets are comfortable and safe. As more community members collect data, Healthier Jupiter shares it with local leaders for safer streets. If we have safer streets, more people will be comfortable to go out for a walk or bike and get in their daily physical activity!

Healthier Jupiter and the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida staff came together to design the materials, and started distribution in August and September. The younger Girl Scouts (Daisy and Brownie) were provided with fun at home activities to learn about the importance of getting outside for physical activity, while promoting walking and biking safety.

In total, 29 Daisies and Brownies registered and receive the packet! A few of the Daisies and Brownies sent in some photos (below) and shared the following stories:

  • Adriana is in Troop 10809 at GSSEF and made sure she was wearing her helmet for her bike ride on the sidewalk in her neighborhood!

  • Breanne is a Girl Scout in Dallas, Georgia and recently took a trip with her family to Orlando to go to Aquatica, Disney, and Universal and walked 60 miles total!

The older Girl Scouts (Juniors, Cadets, Seniors and Ambassadors) were provided a packet to learn more about walk audits as a community tool, and the importance of walking and biking for physical activity. The Walk and Bike on Jupiter Patch Program provided the Girl Scouts with a Walk Audit Tool to conduct on their own, with family or with their troop. Packet materials included:

  • The importance of being active

  • Walk audit, how to stay safe, how to pick your route, and how to conduct

Healthier Jupiter offered a virtual experience to talk about their findings and encourage community engagement. Specifically, we talked about why walking and biking safety is important, went over the results of the data shared and allowed the girls to share concerns and possible ideas for solutions. Check out the results from one of the Girl Scouts in Boca Raton.

For the older girls, in total 17 girls registered -3 of them are from our the Southeast Florida Council, and the other 14 are from different states.

We took inspiration from other Girl Scouts Programs around the country:
