Couch to 5K 2020 - We still had a great time and you can too!

Healthier Jupiter, in partnership with the Town of Jupiter’s Recreation Department and Jupiter Medical Center’s Cary Grossman Health & Wellness Center, created a free nine-week “Couch to 5K” training program to help participants gradually increase their physical activity to walk/run a 5K (3.1 miles). The Couch to 5K program was developed as a way for community members to get active and seek fitness in an inclusive and encouraging environment. It is great to see this program attracted such a diverse group with over 160 people signing up to participate, with many saying they would train on their own. We have participants just getting started with exercise, some getting back in shape, and families looking for an opportunity to bond with physical activity.

We were able to get four trainings in before we cancelled the program due to the coronavirus. Here are some highlights….

By the Numbers:

  • 25 people attended the Information Session to learn more about what to expect with the Couch to 5K Program

  • 161 participants registered

  • 12 participants let us know they would train on their own

  • 67 participants attended Week 1

  • 61 participants attended Week 2

  • 50 participants attended Week 3

Although, the coronavirus cancelled our weekly meet ups, we still encourage our participants to continue walking or running and checking in virtually. On our Facebook group and through email we had 10 people check in and let us know they were still training and we had 4 people share that they completed their 5K! Although we usually give shirts to those who have attended 5+ trainings, we gave shirts to all participants that were interested. So we ended up giving out 26 shirts!

We asked participants, What do you hope to achieve with the Couch to 5K Program? We hope people keep this in mind during these difficult times and continue to set and achieve goals for themselves. Check out some responses below:
